break it down

Tasks and things we need to get done throughout the day can be daunting. Then pack on life goals and ambitions and it just becomes totally overwhelming. That’s how I feel like 24/7 hahaha!

I have been learning on my own, and then my therapist backed it up, that I set too many big and unrealistic goals. So, I have been breaking them down. Not only into smaller tasks, but simpler. Not making them as grandiose as they could be, but actually practical and doable.

This is not a waste, no matter how much I feel it is. Zechariah 4:10 says, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” The Lord loves it! Yes, thank You Jesus! He loves if our faith is only the size of mustard seed, that’s all it takes.

I always think, it is better to do it a little bit than nothing at all. But, I have been slacking on my writing, my motivation has been a bit down. I am working on becoming more consistent, in all areas of my life. That is another thing I struggle with. I can be consistent when it is needed, but if it is up to me, oh boy.

Anyways, if a task feels daunting, break it down. Make it into smaller, doable steps. Break it ALL the way down, hopefully creating a somewhat elementary tasklist. Know that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13) and that “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10).

Not a lot of studies have been completed on the topic of simplifying tasks. A study done at Stanford by Cheng, et al. (2015) found that breaking up tasks did take a longer time but it resulted in fewer mistakes and an easier experience for participants. Participants were more likely to succeed and be stable when being interrupted. I found this to be extremely interesting, the interruption finding. It does make sense though, you lose track of your flow/thinking and it can be harder to pick it back up. A smaller task is just simply easier (hopefully).

So, here’s to breaking it down!!
